Weekly Update on Planning for the 2020-21 School Reopening

In order to keep you informed regarding the planning for the 2020-21 school year and the details on how we will reopen, we will publish an update every Friday throughout the summer.  Additional updates will be provided as developments occur and decisions are made.

Our General Approach to Reopening:

  • We want to be able to reopen with campuses operating with all students and staff present.

  • We know that conditions may not allow for this, so we are planning for the possibility of distance learning continuing for all students.

  • We also know that some families may not be comfortable with their children returning to school because of health concerns so we are planning to make distance learning available on a parent-request basis.

Health and Safety Factors to Be Addressed:

There are many considerations related to the health and safety for students and staff.  The following list is intended to give you a sense of the areas that we are addressing in our planning process.  It is not intended to be a complete list:

  • Screening for symptoms

  • Wearing face coverings

  • Other personal protective equipment

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Classroom cleaning

  • Social distancing

  • Classroom setups

Scheduling Considerations

Again, the bulleted items below are intended to provide you with a sense of the kinds of issues that we are planning for:

  • Staggered start times to allow for health screenings

  • Set instructional schedules on a weekly basis

  • Smaller groups of students on campus/in class at a time

  • Alternate day attendance combined with distance learning

  • Block scheduling options at the high school level

  • Holding classes that involve contact, movement, etc. (P.E. activity classes, etc.)

Programmatic Considerations

    Including, but not limited to:

  • Providing options to meet family needs

  • Improvements to distance learning

  • Remediation for lost learning in this school year

  • Special Education services

  • English Language Development program

  • Social-emotional and mental health supports

  • Equity and access for all students

  • Extra and co-curricular activities.

There are many more areas and issues that we are identifying and addressing.  This information is being shared with you today in the hope of providing you with confidence that we are actively and effectively planning for next year.  As the summer goes on, these communications will be more specific as to what our plans entail and decisions that have been made. Please look for them every Friday afternoon, and attend our teleconference Board Meetings as well.  Our next meeting is on June 18th at 6:00 P.M.
